Larry refinery[Guthrie, OK] Dr. Lawrence J. “Larry” Shadle brings more than three decades of leadership in advanced energy systems, fossil fuel conversion, and fluidization science to FlexiH’s Advisory Board. A renowned expert in conversion technologies, hybrid power systems, and cyber-physical process development, Dr. Shadle’s experience directly strengthens FlexiH’s mission to accelerate the development of a next-generation, low-emission e-refinery platform.

Dr. Shadle spent his career at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), where he led groundbreaking research programs focused on gasification, combustion, liquefaction, retorting, emission control, and process beneficiation for coal and oil shale. His work advanced both experimental and computational modeling capabilities, enabling more accurate process design and deeper understanding of complex multiphase systems—expertise that is foundational to FlexiH’s electrochemical-catalytic refinery architecture.

As Group Leader in NETL’s Computational Sciences Division, Dr. Shadle built a world-class fluidization research facility equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. His experiments became international benchmarks for validating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and remain widely used in modeling and simulation research today. His deep background in experimental design and statistical analysis continues to support the rigorous testing and model-validation approaches central to FlexiH’s technology development.

In his role as Director of NETL’s Thermal Sciences Division, Dr. Shadle oversaw research in advanced power systems—including pressure-gain combustion, direct power extraction, fuel cells, supercritical CO₂ cycles, and hybrid energy systems. His technical leadership contributed to major DOE initiatives, including pilot-scale testing of the TRIG gasifier and pioneering demonstrations of amine-based CO₂ capture using circulating fluid bed technologies.

Dr. Shadle has also participated in numerous DOE review panels, providing technical guidance during key national energy policy reforms. Today, he serves as Chief Technology Officer of Analytic Advancement LLC, where he continues to advance combined heat and power systems aimed at reducing waste heat and greenhouse gas emissions.

With his extensive background in energy conversion, process intensification, emission control, and hybrid systems integration, Dr. Shadle plays a vital role in supporting FlexiH’s vision: to create a new class of carbon-free and carbon-negative e-refinery capable of transforming the future of clean fuels, materials production, and global decarbonization.
